Beautiful place

A beautiful church building over three centuries old lies next to the adjacent buildings and gardens of the former monastery. It is a frequent center of cultural events and the main church in Českolip. Even though I am not a believer, her visit can always have an intense effect on me.

The basilica stands on the site of the original monastery church, which was badly damaged by fire in 1661. In 1700, construction began on a new monastery church and was consecrated seven years later. The onion dome of the tower burned down during a fire in the town in 1820 and was replaced by a temporary pyramid, which remains to this day. On July 9, 1927, the church was promoted to a minor basilica, ie the papal church, as indicated by the coat of arms of Pope Pius XI. at the entrance to the basilica. The interior is equipped with wooden benches, of which the first two rows are decorated with artistic carvings from the late 17th century, and altars from the 18th century. The organ made in 1848 is located on the bar. After its repair in 1940, they have been preserved in a rare original condition and are among the largest and best instruments of their kind in our country. Services are still held in the basilica.
