The church stands on a high promontory above the Šárka valley, in the place of a prehistoric settlement. Archaeological research has shown settlements around the church mainly in the Bronze Age (bronze melting furnaces, graves of Knoviz and Lusatian cultures), but also during the Slavic period. According to legend, the first rotunda or chapel was built in 971 by Prince Boleslav II. Pious out of gratitude to St. Matthew, who appeared to him in these places and saved his life from a wild bear. The church was allegedly consecrated by Bishop of Prague, Saint Adalbert. However, the first documented mentioning it dates back to 1404. As a result of the Hussite wars the church was used for some time by the Utraquists, the Catholic worship was restored here in 1521. The building was not sufficient for the needs of the faithful and was therefore demolished and in 1771 a new church was built in its present form. At that time, a parish at St. Matthew was established at the church. The church was significantly repaired in the second half of the last century. It is an important dominant of the whole area and from the western cemetery wall there is a pretty nice view of the Šárka Valley, which is partially disturbed mature trees.
