The building used to be the seat of the castellans and later the burgrave moved into it. The building probably stood here already in the Romanesque period. In the 14th century the house served as a temporary shelter for the future king and emperor Charles IV. After a fire in 1541, the palace underwent extensive reconstruction in the Renaissance style. A Black Tower is also a part of the area, which served as a prison. The wall above the entrance gate is decorated with four coats of arms of the highest burgraves, which date back to the 17th and 18th centuries. These are the coats of arms of Adam of Wallenstein, Jaroslav Bořita of Martinice, Jan Josef of Vrtba and Karel Egon of Fürstenberk. The highest burgrave was a high-ranking provincial official whose office evolved from the function of castle manager, and as such could represent the monarch during his absence. This office was held by members of the most important noble families. Budova nejdřív bývala sídlem kastelánů a později se do ní nastěhovali purkrabí. Stavba zde pravděpodobně stála již v době románské. Ve čtrnáctém století dům sloužil jako dočasné přístřeší pro budoucího krále a císaře Karla IV. Po požáru v roce 1541 prošel palác rozsáhlou rekonstrukcí ve slohu renesančním. Součástí areálu je Černá věž, terá sloužila jako vězení. Zeď nad vstupní branou zdobí čtyři erby nejvyšších purkrabích, které pocházejí ze 17. a 18. století - Adama z Valdštejna, Jaroslava Bořity z Martinic, Jana Josefa z Vrtby a Karla Egona z Fürstenberka. Nejvyšší purkrabí byl vysoce postavený zemský úředník, jehož úřad se vyvinul z funkce hradního kastelána, a jako takový mohl zastupovali panovníka v době jeho nepřítomnosti. Tento úřad zastávali členové nejvýznamnějších šlechtických rodů.
