The medieval fortifications in Kouřim are among the best preserved ramparts in the Czech lands, but they also excel in the European context - that is why the Czech government declared it a national cultural monument in 1995. The local fortification system is unique because of the large part of it is well preserved - the walls now extend to a total length of 1,250 meters. To all those interested in the fortificational architecture I highly recommend local educational trail which leads through town alongside the walls and has nine stops with information panels. The fortification system was gradually built from the middle of the 13th century until the beginning of the 16th century and consists of two strips of walls separating the fourteen meters wide defending corridor. The inner fortification wall was reinforced with several prismatic towers while the outer wall was originally reinforced by 18 half-cylindrical towers of which 16 are preserved until today. Up to now, a large part of the fortifications has survived together with one of the four original gates called Pražská - the most preserved Early Gothic City Gate in the Czech Republic. Most of the walls are now freely accessible. Good place is the city park in the southern part of the fortification, which is adjacent to the unforgettable Museum bastion. There are also remnants of fortification on the eastern side of the city, especially from the Kolínská Gate on the north. The northeastern bend conceals the only place where the original main wall was preserved in full. The wall system in the north and west are also perfectly preserved in the spacing between the Prague and Oleš Gate.
