In the northern part of the square, directly opposite the Teplice chateau, there is a classicist house called the "Golden Cross". The house was built as a hotel in 1809 by the wealthy family of the future mayor of Teplice, Eduard John. A number of important guests took turns in the thirty rooms during its operation; but three of them are remembered far beyond the city limits. It was here, after the key battle of Chlumec and Přestanov in September 1813, that the Russian, Austrian and Prussian rulers met to negotiate further action against Napoleon, as commemorated by a plaque. The building still serves as a dwelling and surprises with an exceptionally well-preserved main facade.
